Making magic sand (also known as hydrophobic or kinetic sand) at home is a fun DIY project! Magic sand is regular sand coated with a hydrophobic material, making it water-resistant and moldable. Here’s how you can make it:
Materials Needed:
1. Fine Sand (play sand or clean craft sand)
2. Hydrophobic Coating Agent (choose one):
– Scotchgard™ Fabric & Upholstery Protector (fluoropolymer-based)
– WD-40 Specialist® Silicone Lubricant
– Rain-X® (original formula for glass)
– Food-grade silicone oil (for a safer, non-toxic option)
3. Mixing Bowl & Spoon
4. Baking Sheet or Tray (for drying)

Method 1: Using Scotchgard/Rain-X/WD-40
1. Clean & Dry the Sand:
– If using beach or outdoor sand, rinse it well and bake at 250°F (120°C) for 30 minutes to dry and sterilize it. Let it cool.
2. Coat the Sand:
– Spread the dry sand on a baking sheet in a thin layer.
– Spray a generous amount of Scotchgard, Rain-X, or WD-40 over the sand while stirring to ensure even coating.
3. Mix Thoroughly:
– Use a spoon to mix well until all grains are coated.
4. Let It Dry:
– Allow the treated sand to air-dry for 1–2 hours (or bake at low heat ~150°F / 65°C for faster drying).
5. Test It Out:
– Once dry, try molding the d—it should clump together when pressed but stay dry when submerged in water!

Method 2: Using Silicone Oil (Non-Toxic Option)
1. Mix 1 cup of fine sand with 2–3 tablespoons of food-grade silicone oil.
2. Stir until evenly coated—the sand should stick together but not feel greasy.
3. If too wet, add more sand; if too dry, add a few drops more silicone oil.

How It Works:
The hydrophobic coating repels water, allowing the grains to stick together when pressed but stay dry underwater—
